If you're thinking about living on Daniel Island, SC, I get why. Total population is only 11,183 which gives it the "small town" feel. It's one of my favorite spots in the whole Charleston area, and I get to show it off to folks all the time. I moved here in 2014 after 10 years living in Mount Pleasant, SC since 2003 and I've never looked back! So let's skip the fluff and get into what daily life here actually looks like. It's such a small town fell I tell everyone I need to make sure I wear my lipstick to Publix because I'm sure I'll run into somebody I know!
Bike Trails, Jogging/Walking Trails, Water-Wrapped Community
Daniel Island sits right between the Cooper and Wando Rivers, and you can feel it everywhere you go. There are over 20 miles of walking and biking paths that wind through the neighborhoods, so you don't need a car for everything. Grab your coffee, hop on a bike or your golf cart, and you're at the park in five minutes. My morning routine is grabbing coffee at Blondies (NJ owned and delicious bagels and breakfast sandwiches) then I start my work day.
Folks who live here love the boating, kayaking, and fishing that come with all that water. And the town center is built for walking, so you can stroll to dinner, a boutique shop, Publix, or a concert.
Great Schools and a Real Family Feel
If you've got kids (or you're planning to), this matters a lot. Daniel Island School covers kindergarten through 8th grade, and from there, families head to Philip Simmons High School or Bishop England High School which is a private Catholic school. Both have strong reputations around Charleston.
Beyond the schools, this is a place where neighbors actually know each other. There's a real sense of community here, with events all year long that bring everyone out. The annual 4th of July Golf Cart Parade is one of my favorite things to do! Afterwards, theres a dance band at Smythe Park with food vendors, and everyone brings their lawn chairs and coolers.
Things to Do (So You're Never Bored)
Daniel Island keeps its residents busy without needing to leave the island:
- Publix and local shops for everyday errands
- Restaurants like Vinea for a fancy evening out, Orlandos for NY Style Pizza, Wasabi for Sushi, Dragon Palace Chinese, New Realm Brewing for lots of live music, especially pre-concert, Vespa for brick oven pizza, and of course our local dive bar Macs for great food, outdoor seating, and especially for watching sports events! There's also Viva Tequilas for great margaritas and guesse what? They host the NY GIANTS FAN CLUB for all the games!
- CREDIT ONE STADIUM!! I have seen Stevie Nicks and Elton John here and this fall is James Taylor - there are tons of awesome shows from spring to the fall!
- Two golf courses at the Daniel Island Club
- The Kids Triathlon every June
- A big Fourth of July golf cart parade
- Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting each December
- The Waterfront Pavilion has FREE live music every Thursday in the spring and fall - just bring your chair and picnic basket!
- There are Arts and Crafts shows during the holidays and scattered intermittently throughout the year
- Carefree Boat Club is at the dock with reasonable rates to join the boating community!
- The Annual Womens Tennis Open is every April where the best of the best compete each year, yes I've seen Venus Williams at CVS!
And when you want a bigger night out, downtown Charleston is just a short ferry ride away on the Daniel Island Ferry!
Who Tends to Love It Here
Daniel Island tends to draw families who want good schools and safe streets, retirees who want an easy, walkable lifestyle, and folks who love being near the water without living right on the ocean. It's a mix of ages, but there's a shared love of that small-town, community feel. I won't lie, its a VERY VERY upscale area where homes start at $1M, however fear not - I am a condo specialist and if your budget doesn't allow a single family house, condo life is great here! All Daniel Island Condos are located near The Waterfront and right in the heart of downtown with easy access onto the trails! You see and hear the stadium for the live music right from your porch!
